REG 8 17
GOVERNMENT HOUSE.
HONGKONG. 27th. March, 1917.
Sir,
I have the honour to forward herewith the
retums ɗ enemy property in this Colony, required by the Public
Trustee, summarised and arranged under headings as prescribed in
your predecessor's Circular Despatch of February 1st., 1916. A
return is added of the amount paid by the Custodian from the credit
balmces of local enemy firms in liquidation to the Crown Agents
for investment in the War Loan.
2.
It has been found impossible to make the re-
-turns complete, in the following respects:-
(a). Many creditors apparently bearing German names, and
chiefly depositors in the local Savings Bank, cannot
be traced or identified. These unidentified creditors
number 191 and account for an extra sum of
$222,945.84 or £25,081.
(b). The value of shares held in certain private compani-
-es in North China has not yet been ascertained.
(c). The liquidations of local German firms are still not
quite completed; but the greater part of the credit
balaces have been paid to the Custodian and in-
-vested by him as show in Return (3).
3.
The above particulars will however be included,
as soon as they are ascertained, in the further Quarterly Returns
RIGHT HONOURABLE
WALTER LONG, M.P.
